1975 ONE-MAN SHOW, DAAD & GALERIE SPRINGER, BERLIN
The DAAD (Deutsche Akademische Austausch Dienst) which is translated as the German Academic Exchange Office, sponsors the Artist in Residence program in Berlin. As a result of Baker's shows with Galerie Springer, he was invited to do a one year residency with the program in Berlin in 1971-2. He was invited again for another period in 1975. This was a show that resulted from that residency. We can see that the kinetic works represented here are all based on disc shapes, with the principle variations coming in the orientation and number of axes, which could give a very broad range of motion possibilities. This disc motif would dominate the artist's work for about ten years, at least until the mid-Eighties, and would result in some of his largest and most impressive public sculptures, in addition to the more intimate and intricate smaller works shown in gallery shows like this.
